To connect to the Internet, you will need an ISP. Preferably you will have
an ISP that you can call locally. STD rates as well as ISP connection
fees can be quite expensive. You will usually be charged for a local
call plus the time spent connected to the Internet. Policies vary,
so talk to your provider to see how they charge.
Some universities and TAFEs can serve as relatively low cost ISPs.
That is, some allow students of other universities to have a basic
account for a minimal fee.
Most ISPs provide PPP connections. We'll assume they do. Other types
of connections are possible but we will not discuss them in this
document. Once you have decided on an ISP, they need to provide you with
the following information for a PPP connection:
- Phone Number
- What phone number do you need to dial to get your
PPP connection?
- IP Address
- Does your ISP use dynamic or static IP address
numbers? Most use dynamic numbers. If you are using a static IP
address, ask what it is and also what network mask number your ISP
uses.
- Domain Name Servers
- What are the IP addresses of your ISP's
Domain Name Servers? Usually there will be two of these but only one is
needed. You may as well find out what your Domain Name is as well. For
example, it's une.edu.au for UNE.
- PAP
- Does your ISP use the Password Authentication Protocol (PAP)?
