COSC593 is a 24 credit-point research project that is aimed to assist students in developing a deeper knowledge in solving real world problems relevant to the areas they have chosen. The goal of this project is for students to gain practical experience working on research projects under the guidance of experienced supervisors. Students will produce a substantial research thesis that will be examined by academics both internal and external to the university. Students completing COMP400 in the Bachelor of Computer Science with Honours will also be able to draw on projects listed for COSC593.

In this unit, students do a research project under a supervisor and write a thesis. The thesis is sent to two examiners who will assess the thesis and produce an examination report. If the examiners pass the thesis then the student will pass. The examiners may also fail the thesis or ask to revise it.

Students are expected to pursue their research topic diligently and manage their time effectively so that the project can be complete along side any other course required in the Master of Computer Science or Master of Information Technology.

COSC593 Pre-requisites

In order to enter COSC593, students must be enrolled in either a Master of Computer Science or a Master of Information Technology and have completed 18cps at 500-level with a GPA of 5.0 or higher. This 18cps will need to include a credit or higher in SCI500. This is to ensure that students have the appropriate background required for a research thesis.
